Before I share some things I’ve been loving this month, I need your help! I feel like I’m approaching somewhat of a writer’s block when it comes to new nutrition topics and would love to hear what you’d like to be reading about. Feel free to comment below or reply to this post. As always, I appreciate you reading!
And now, amidst another gross heat wave in New York, here are some random things I’ve been loving this month.
This Lemon Herb Pasta Salad with Marinated Chickpeas
I have probably sent this recipe to every single one of my clients, and for a lot of good reasons. It’s a good source of complex carbs, fiber and is very easy to make. It’s also delicious cold and doesn’t require a ton of cooking, i.e., perfect for summer. I usually add roasted or sautéed broccoli to the recipe for more veggies, and a protein source like sautéed shrimp or rotisserie chicken. Try it!
Running in a sports bra
Back when I was running a lot of marathons and training constantly in the summer heat, I can’t remember a single time when I wore just a sports bra during my runs. Looking back, it’s obvious now how self conscious I was, and very much struggling with body image issues. It wasn’t until probably two years ago when a). I was a lot more comfortable in my body and b). it was so miserably hot that I just said fuck it, and took my tank off mid-run. Low and behold, it’s feels a lot cooler without a heavy wet shirt sticking to your mid section. This summer has been so hot and humid, sports bra runs have been so helpful! I won’t say I have zero body image challenges now, but I will say that as I’ve gotten older and more comfortable in my skin it has gotten easier to let some insecurities go.
Hatch
Before I started my new job at the hospital, I wasn’t really needing an alarm in the morning (due in part to Peanut, lol). Now, I do get up so early that it’s necessary, and I can’t find a ring tone on my iPhone that isn’t awful and jolting. I’ve been thinking of getting a Hatch to make the waking up process a bit more gentle. Basically, you awaken slowly with a gradual, gentle light and soothing tones (like forest birds). It sounds delightful, and I’ll let you know if I try it.
7 For All Mankind Alexa High Rise Ankle Flare Jeans
I know this is not a fashion newsletter, but I think I finally found the perfect pair of jeans and will not gatekeep. I was randomly in Bloomindale’s SoHo recently, trying random jeans on (as one does), and came across these. Because I have muscular legs and a smaller waist, it’s really hard for me to find jeans that fit well without having to tailor them. THESE ARE PERFECT. That is all.
Thoughts on the “Girl Dinner” trend
Here is an article explaining what a “girl dinner” is, which was popularized by TikTok, of course. It’s really nothing new! In fact, I talked to a client the other day about designing a dinner like this because of the oppressive heat and her lack of desire to cook anything. Except I called it a “charcuterie board.” A snack plate consisting of things like bread, cheese, crackers, nuts, a spread of some sort, meat or meats, can absolutely make a substantial meal. It just has to include all of the usual suspects - some carbs, protein, fat, and fiber - and be satisfying. Meaning, the size of your “girl dinner” may be different from your friends or XX TikTok star because it takes different amounts of food to satisfy different people. I agree with the article I shared here in that the label or name “girl dinner” doesn’t make much sense, but the concept of the meal definitely does.
Vitamin to *still* get enough
Even in the summer, many if not the majority of people should be taking a vitamin D supplement. Remember, wearing sunscreen, which is GREAT THING, may block natural vitamin D production from UV rays. Ditto for working all day in an office. Now is as good a time as any to get your vitamin D levels checked and supplement accordingly.
