One of my favorite sayings is: “don’t wish the days away,” highlighting the importance to stay present, and really, be grateful for every day you have. As an anxious person, I find this quite challenging as my brain really likes to stress about the present and worry about the future instead. It’s fun. Summer heat and humidity are my least favorite type of weather, and I always have to work extra hard to not wish the days away when it gets so hot in NYC that the simple act of going outside feels completely awful. As I write this, it’s going to be 101 degrees in Manhattan. Instead of losing myself in Zillow looking/pining for an upstate escape home, I thought I’d make a list of things I personally like to do in New York when it’s oppressively hot.
Museums
I fully enjoy an air-conditioned museum in the summer, though I prefer going for a particular exhibit as opposed to just wandering. The good news is that there are almost always special exhibits at most museums in the city; there’s also the newly opened Rockefeller wing at the Met, and the recent re-opening of The Frick (which is so fantastic, highly recommend). Exhibits on my list include Mary Heilman: Long Line and Amy Sherald: American Sublime at The Whitney, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style and Sargent & Paris at The Met, and Cosmic Splendor: Jewelry from the Collection of Van Cleef & Arpels at the Natural History Museum.
